Liverpool vs West Ham United Match Report- Kop End Experience

Arriving at Anfield on Match day

There are football stadiums you visit, and then there are stadiums you feel. Anfield is a stadium steeped in history; the Kop End, famous for its tales, boasts some of the most famous atmospheres ever produced. I was lucky enough to experience a Premier League game from the famous Kop End. This atmosphere is globally recognised as one of the best in the world; it did not disappoint.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Champions League football is essential to salvaging a poor season. As a Liverpool FC supporter myself, this game felt huge. West Ham United are fighting to save their Premier League status, so despite being 17th, this game would not be easy for the Reds.

Liverpool v West Ham United was the fixture, and it delivered. A five-star Liverpool performance earned them a 5-2 victory on the day. Goals from Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, Virgil Van Dijk and an own goal treated the stadium to a thrilling contest. Arne Slot’s team has won their 4th game in a row in what has been an inconsistent season.

Here’s what match day felt like from inside the Kop End.

The Walk to Anfield: Pre Match Atmosphere

The match day experience starts long before the first whistle. My Liverpool experience in the Kop End begins now. Walking towards Anfield, you feel a seismic energy shift. Walking through the terraced houses and estates, Anfield appears. The sheer size of the stadium is something to behold. The surrounding pubs spill out onto the streets, and a sea of red takes over. Like every game, I start by purchasing my match-day programme.

There was a tangible tension in the air as Liverpool supporters prepared for battle. Outside the Main Stand, a live band took to the stage singing the fans’ favourite chants, only enhancing the pre-match atmosphere. Street vendors and magazine sellers only further Liverpool’s unique atmosphere. The Liverpool ‘Fanzine’ has been sold for decades, and the voice of the seller is heard every week.

The hustle and bustle of the area created a sense of organised chaos, which carried over to the terraces as Liverpool’s atmosphere built. Statues of the club’s greatest ever icons, such as legendary manager Bill Shankly and legendary player Sir Kenny Dalglish, surround the stadium, showing the club’s immense pride, commemorating historic figures who contributed so much to build the modern-day giant that is Liverpool FC. The champions’ wall outside the stadium further cements the mentality of this behemoth club, as they boast their tremendous history as the country’s most decorated club.

After exploring the outside, it was time to enter the most iconic football stand in the country and further my experience watching Liverpool in the Kop End.

Climbing into the Kop End

As I scanned my ticket and went through the turnstile, the build-up and anticipation became my reality. The historic moments witnessed in this stand spread across generations, creating an immense sense of aura and heritage. The Kop is known as the 12th man, players and managers of the past claim the Kop transcends vocal support, creating such loud atmospheres that it can tangibly and visibly impact the outcome on the pitch. 12,850 passionate Reds sit here every week, helping get their beloved team over the line.

The journey begins as you enter the concourse, pints of beer flowing, and songs being sung is the best way to describe it. The concourse is compact and dense, this bustling atmosphere gave this stand an intense and tough feel which translates into the stand. After sinking a pre-match beer and embracing the atmosphere, it was time to find my seat.

As I walked out to my seat, I was met by a stunning spectacle, Anfield. The sun shone perfectly onto the crisp green grass as the players walked out to warm up. The steepness of the Kop End caught me by surprise; the staircase to row 66 felt never-ending. As I found my seat, the view was unbelievable, an elevated view of the entire pitch as I gazed on in amazement. Taking my seat in England’s most iconic football stand.

The atmosphere was bubbling as kick-off approached. The seat was compact and tight; leg room is not a factor, as this is standing only. Ten minutes from kick-off, and the ground began to fill out as more and more passionate reds prepared for the match. This is not a stand you sit quietly in, but embrace the atmosphere and let it capture you and take you on a 90-minute journey.

The famous anthem beckons as kick-off nears; this iconic song, representing solidarity, hope, and resilience, is deeply tied into the local community and perfectly employs the ideology and values of this great club.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone” From Inside the Stand

My Liverpool experience from the Kop End peaked as I bore witness to one of the most uplifting and powerful moments one could see within the confines of a football stadium. As the first note of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” plays, the stadium changes. This cauldron of raw emotion connects over 60,000 people bound by a powerful display of identity and unity. Scarves were lifted instinctively as friends and families bond, sharing moments that will last a lifetime. Goosebumps.

From inside the Kop, the anthem doesn’t just sound loud- it feels physical. The impact this has on opposing teams is clear. The anthem serves as a psychological and emotional catalyst for Liverpool players, giving them that extra boost. This is the final act that the supporters provide; it’s on the players now.

How the Kop Shapes the Game

Let my Liverpool experience in the Kop End begin!

This 90-minutes encapsulated everything I know about Liverpool FC. Goals, noise, tension and passion. This seven-goal thriller involved five Liverpool goals met by five deafening Anfield roars. Tackles cheered like goals and silence when the opposition scored; every range of emotion was felt during this rollercoaster football match.

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring after just 5 minutes with a stunning volley into the bottom corner, wrong-footing the goalkeeper. The stadium erupted as the early tension was released into a well-receiving Anfield. Anfield became deafening with chants of “Hugo Ekitike, du du du”. Ekitike has become a fan favourite amongst the “Kopites”. Liverpool continued to apply the pressure with the full force of Anfield behind them. Being led and orchestrated by the Kop End.

Would Liverpool’s persistence pay off?

Liverpool raced into an early 3-0 lead, goals from the Captain Van Dijk and Mac Allister furthered the Reds’ lead. Liverpool’s pursuit of the 3 points and ruthlessness were on full display as they put West Ham to the sword. Anfield bounced in sync as the Reds ran riot. There was a sense of surprise as these commanding leads have not arrived in abundance this season. Arne Slot’s men were cruising to another 3 points.

The early second-half momentum shifted significantly within the early stages as West Ham pulled a goal back. When the momentum shifted, you could feel the anxiety ripple through the heart of the stadium. Silence was followed by a loud chorus of “Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool”; the supporters get behind their team even after conceding. They witness their team struggle, recognise this and do their part.

The second half provided me with two more Liverpool goals as they sailed to a comprehensive 5-2 victory. Goals from Cody Gakpo and a West Ham United own goal furthered the home side’s advantage. As the sunset over a grateful Anfield, the game fizzled out as Liverpool coasted to 5th in the Premier League. The Kop doesn’t watch the football; it reacts to it.

Liverpool supporters serenaded their players with a chorus of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as the match drew to a close. This final rendition displayed pride and happiness at their team’s performance and efforts.

Leaving Anfield: Post-Match Atmosphere

When the final whistle blew, the noise didn’t stop; choruses of various fan favourite chants continued as the atmosphere slowly quietened when the supporters dispersed from Anfield. The noise now calmed, the only thing to be heard was hundreds of conversations from happy Reds.

As I reluctantly departed the famous Kop End, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Walking back, I reflected on the unforgettable experience I had not only watched but that I was able to contribute to one of the country’s most iconic atmospheres. Immersing myself in the most famous part of my club’s stadium and atmosphere on a match day.

Fans left in high spirits, and the good vibes did not end on exit. The buzzing mood lingered on the Anfield grounds as thousands of Reds went home happy. Match day doesn’t end on the final whistle and carries on into the pubs and bars across the city.

Is Sitting in the Kop Worth It?

Sitting in the Kop End is an experience any Liverpool supporter or football fan should have. It will provide you with an authentic football experience like no other. For atmosphere, very few places in the country can compete. This wall of red generates noise like very few. If you are a thrill-seeking football fan who wants to dive in headfirst, this is the place to sit.

If the opportunity is there, I would prioritise sitting here, but it shouldn’t make or break your trip. Watching a match at Anfield is an incredible experience in itself and should be on every football fan’s bucket list.

Despite all the positives, the Kop experience is not for everyone. The standing requirement and tightness of the seating can be tough to navigate for some supporters. For a comfortable match experience, this would not be optimal. The Kop is notoriously compact.

In conclusion, watching Liverpool at the Kop is an amazing and unique experience, providing an adrenaline rush like no other. This should be a must-visit for all football fanatics.
